“I came to know about MPTF years ago because I’ve always had a fascination for old Hollywood. And MPTF is like this tether to the advent of an industry I always aspired to be a part of,” explains Greg Berlanti, writer, producer, director. “As I became more involved in the industry I learned about all of the ways in which MPTF helps our community. That’s something I really believe in. I’m very aware of the sacrifices of all the people who came before me and the need to support that legacy.”

BREAKING BARRIERS

On Greg’s Wikipedia page, we can read about the reach he established in the entertainment community when in 2017/18 he tied Jerry Bruckheimer’s 2005/6 record for “having ten different live-action scripted television series airing on various networks.” He’ll be the first to admit, this is a tough business, but the opportunity to influence society and culture for the better—that’s the power everyone in this industry shows up for, from PAs and grips to writers and directors.

A CRISIS, AN OPPORTUNITY

When Greg talks of his own journey he reveals a sense of wisdom established from his struggle growing up and feeling apart from the mainstream. “Someone early on in the business told me every crisis is an opportunity.” And the result of that struggle is evident in Greg’s passion. “Our medium can touch more people now than ever in the history of the world of storytelling. Stories give us a window into others. Hopefully we can connect people in ways that maybe they didn’t think of, by being truthful, honest, and authentic.”

“Television is ultimately a
business of failure. You try a lot
of things, and most of it fails.”

– Greg Berlanti
THE ULTIMATE GIG ECONOMY

In acknowledging the people, Greg knows, “this industry isn’t always the most lucrative for people who work in it. So we need to find ways that we can take care of everyone.”

Many people incur injuries from their work in the industry, or experience an illness or misfortune—the kinds of events no one thinks about and didn’t plan for. These people will need our support. From palliative care and a place to live in the older years to child care and veteran’s assistance—for those needs, it is the safety net of MPTF that provides support. Your donation helps others in need.

FIGHT FOR RIGHTS

Greg not only supports MPTF, he’s a pivotal activist for the people and stories missing from our collective narrative. He speaks eloquently of “wanting to get that sense of truth into narrative shows… When I entered the business, people were still really scared, in terms of LGBT, to be fully themselves.” Greg talks about how rewarding this move to greater acceptance has been, “It just makes me want to be a part of that for other individuals, to make sure we’re creating a safe place for everyone to share their truth.”

When looking to the future, Greg talks about the younger generation and the energy is palpable, “I’m excited by the younger generation. They are really, really facile in figuring out ways to be a part of changing the world. The generation coming of age right now feels more determined to do that than any generation I’ve seen prior. I’m excited by their commitment and innovation.”
